Hi we are The Denominators and this is our maths wikispace!
Starting at the left there is Rebecca, Lisa, and then Jeanan.
We called ourselves the Denominators because we liked the sound of it and we knew what it meant. It means the bottom number of a fraction.
First we will talk about Rebecca. Rebecca enjoys making formulas. She doesn't mind between team work and individual. She works well in both. She is the teams manager and keeps us right.
Now for Lisa. Lisa enjoys playing math games and doing problem solving. She likes doing team work. She is the reporter and reports our work to the rest of the groups in the class.
Finally Jeanan, our last team mate. Jeanan enjoys working in groups for maths. She likes doing problem solving. She is also our secretary and takes all of the notes and also types.
SO THATS OUR TEAM, THE DENOMINATORS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
OUR PROGRESS!!!
Fractions
Lately we did fractions. We weren't just doing a third of something, we had to say what a fraction was! Also we did equal fractions, precentage fractions and decimal fractions. We did double digit denominator fractions!(Like our name!)
New maths game
Mrs. Vass showed us a new site with a gret maths game!! We weren't very good at it though. At least we tried and we had fun. The game involves fractions and you have to match them to fractions which have the same value. The highest we got was about 2000.
Podcasting
You have probably heard our podcasts on the main blog but we also do them in maths! We did one for fractions which should be on our blog soon. We take turns doing different parts so we all get a chance to speak, no one is left out.
Our maths video
There is a video of us saying our solution of the Himalayan expedition maths problem. You can watch it on the maths blog's main page. You will see us! Starting from the left on the video , Lisa , Jeanan and then Rebecca but you'll probably have known that from the picture of us at the top of the page!Remember we are called the Denominators and not the Formulas because the Formulas have a video too. So make sure to watch.
What we did in maths
In maths today we were discussing bullying with the Formulas group to make a graph. We decided to survey the P6 classes. We disscused bullyig and where we think its most likely to happen. Then we went around the classes asking who had been bullied before in school. In the primary 6 classes there were lots of children bullied so we took note. Then we went back and found out the answers but in a girls column and in a boys column. After that we went back and gave everyone who said that they had been bulied and and gave them all a questionair each to fill it in and give us it back so that we could calculate the results and make a graph.
This is Lisa. Lately in maths we have been doing graphs and we did it the new way. We did it more verbally than writing the answers. It helps as I learned that graphs don't always tell the truth. There is loads of different types of graphs. this way of maths helps.
This is Rebecca. Over the past few days in maths we were talking about graphs. I enjoy Mrs Vass' way instead of the textbook way. I think the textbook way is boring. Mrs Vass' way is interesting. I learned that graphs can sometimes miss information and you can use any information to make a graph.
In maths this week [8/2/07] we have been discussing 3D shapes like tetrahedron, triangular prisms, octrahedron, square based pyramids, etc. We have been doing textbook work but have also been doing fun stuff without the textbooks. We have been playing games as soon as we come into maths to get our brains warmed up to do shapes. Yesterday we used playdo to stick art straws together to make shapes.
This week[15/3/07] we were using protractors for measuring angles. We were doing acute, obtuse and reflex.Acute is an angle less than 90 degrees and Obtuse is larger than 90 degrees. Reflex is a different type of angle, it is bigger than 180 degrees. When we used the protractors for reflex angle we had to measure the angle then take that number from 360 degrees. We have been doing the answers on our phones, thats what we didn't mention. Lately we have been using our phones for maths...we write the answers in the phones, show our teachers and get it checked. This is useful towards the rainforest as it saves paper!
