Hi, we are the calculators. In the calculators there is Dana m, Kirsty w and Caitlin m. We chose the name calculators because we think we are a bit brainy !(just a bit) Calculators means a device to do your sums. Above is a link to our podcast that we done and it is called problem 1. We found it quite difficult at the start but in the end we managed to get the answer.
Problem 1- Himalayan Expedition

3D Shapes
For the past week or so we have been learning about 3D shapes. Some of the shapes were quite tricky but others were easy. One of the shapes that we found difficult was the Dodecahedron which is a 16 sided shape. Today we done a quiz on how well we knew each shape.
Problem 1
On a expition in the Himalayas a group of climbers comes to a rope bridge across a very wide gorge. A nearby notice says Maximum load 220kg. The group consists of two climbers with rucksacks, three porters and five large packs of supplies. A porter can carry two packs.
THE WEIGHTS ARE : Porter - 70kg packs - 18kg climbers with rucksacks 95kg. How can they cross the bridge safely with all their belongings in less than 5 trips?
Here is caitlins problem
If you take 2 of the porters across then that weights 140kg and that is 1 trip, then with your 5 packs across then that weights 90kgand 1 porter then altogether that makes 160kg so they can go across, now the 2 porters, the 5 packs and the other porter are all across to the other side. Then send the climbers across and that makes 190kg so altogether everyone is across.
Here is danas problem
You take ten from the porter and put that with the climbers with the rucksacks which makes both of them 200kg. so you will have two journeys and you only have 90kg left and that 3 trips.
In class we have been doing fractions like 1/2=2/4 all three of us found this quite easy but other groups didn't quite get it. We done a pod cast on fractions but we havn't had time to put it on. Our maths teacher Mrs Vass introduced classroom A or classroom B. Classroom A was working collaboratively in our groups of three or four. Classroom B was working from textbooks with no help and silence. As you could probably guess we chose classroom A.
We were playing a game that involves using fractions on the internet. The winner out of the three of us was Dana then Caitlin was second and Kirsty was last. It is a fun game to play and you can learn alot more about fractions.
In our maths class today we were talking about bulling. We made up questions with two other groups which were the brackets and dividends. Tomorrow we are making up graph using the questions that we asked.

The past week in maths we have been working on angles. Mrs Vass also taught us how to use protractors some of us got the hang of it in the end but others just didn't have a clue.(But the calculators managed it
)Some of the angles were really hard but at least we tried to work it out. Mrs Vass wrote a bulling report and when she got it back she was really pleased with it so she brought us in some sweets.
We were allowed to bring in our phones but only for maths use. One of the days we got to write the answers on our phone and then checked them with other peoples answers.
